Chef Erin: Your Personal Culinary Expert in Metro-West Boston

Welcome to The Saucy Plate, your Metro-West Boston Personal Chef. I’m Chef Erin and I’m so glad you’ve found me! I’ve been in love with food ever since the age of three, when my parents took me to a peel-and-eat shrimp buffet and mom spent all night peeling shrimp for me to eat (sorry, mom). From then on, I skipped over the kids meals entirely and dove into the adult world of filet, lobster and even buffalo chicken wings (still some of my favorite foods). In high school, I worked for several years at a Chinese restaurant. Double-shift weekends were a gift, as I was invited to partake in the 3pm house meal, which often consisted of homemade dumplings, mystery soups, delicately braised bok choy, and whole-roasted fish.

My food world expanded when I left my home state of New Hampshire for college in Syracuse, New York, where foods like sushi, Pho and Banh Mi sandwiches blew my mind. I continued to explore new food cultures and cuisines in Boston, where I worked as a journalist by day and a server in Harvard Square at night. For over a decade I built a career in publishing, first as a newspaper reporter and editor, and then as an editorial and production manager at a global market research firm. While I enjoyed this work, the kitchen was always calling.

In 2010 I took a leap of faith and enrolled in Boston University’s MLA Gastronomy program, with a focus on culinary arts and food policy. At BU, I completed the Culinary Certificate Program, as well as the Cheese Certificate Program, and Levels 1 and 2 of the Wine Program. In 2013 I graduated with my Master of Liberal Arts in Gastronomy. Nights spent in BU’s kitchen were unforgettable. I learned how to make homemade pasta from Dante de Magistris, sublime Turkish delights from the Chef de Cuisine at Oleana, and practiced classic French techniques with the master, Jacques Pépin.

As a personal chef, my focus is on wholesome, unfussy recipes with an emphasis on in-season produce and quality ingredients. I believe that cooking should be fun, that what we consume is integral to our overall health, and that mealtime should be stress-free. When I’m not in the kitchen, I can be found playing with my two daughters, snuggling our two cats Biscuit and Tig, volunteering with my local PTO, or watching survival reality shows with my husband (have you seen Alone on the History Channel? Obsessed!).
